If you’re looking for where to book accommodation in Tasmania, Hobart is the place to start. Around 80% of tourists flying into Tasmania arrive in Hobart. It’s the capital of Tasmania, it’s biggest city by far, the centre of it’s food & brew culture, and an excellent base for exploring Tasmania’s south.

Hobart has that much to do and see we recommend booking accommodation for at least 2 nights a 7 day itinerary.

Where to stay in Hobart

Waterfront: Waterfront accommodation in Hobart is extremely popular. The location at Constitution Dock is top tier, along with the views. You’re minutes walk from the shopping, dining, and bars of Salamanca. Walking distance from the saturday morning Salamanca Markets. Staying here, you’ll be surrounded by seafood and other excellent waterfront dining options.

Central Business District: The CBD is where to stay for access to shopping, the weekend Farm Gate Market, the Tasmania Museum and Art Gallery, restuarants, craft beer bars and pubs. It’s also a short walk to Constitution Dock and Salamanca. 

NoHo: North Hobart is where you’ll find the best restaurants in Hobart, by variety. It’s also jam packed with Hobart’s best breweries. Think grunge, street art, hip bars, banging pubs , cool cafes – that’s NoHo. Elizabeth Street is where the action is.

Launceston

Launceston Tasmania accommodation

While Hobart has you covered in the south, you can’t go past Launceston if you’re looking for where to book your Tasmania accommodation in the north. Launceston is Tasmania’s second largest city, the food and wine capital of northern Tasmania, the home of famous Cataract Gorge, and a great base to explore the riches of Tasmania’s north.

One night and two full days in Launceston should give you time to see the highlights. If you’re using it as a base to see the north, 3 nights is ideal.

Where to stay in Launceston

,Devonport is a less obvious inclusion on our top destinations list. But it’s Tasmania’s third largest city, and the main service area for the fabulous north west. It’s also home to the Spirit of Tasmania. And if you’re bringing your car to Tassie, you’ll arrive in Devonport – in fact 23% of visitors to Tasmania come through here. So we couldn’t leave it out!

Devonport is an up and coming city. There’s breweries, gin bars, a few great restaurants, and beaches to explore. If you’re staying for the city itself, one night may be enough. If you’re making it your base in the north west, you’ll need much much longer! There’s so much to do around here!

Where to stay in Devonport

Devonport CBD: Staying in the city center puts you right in the middle of Devonport’s vibrant mix of restaurants, best cafes. It’s a great choice for convenience, shopping, and the city’s waterfront – the Bluff – are all within walking distance. Most hotels are located in the city, with views along the Mersey River.

Coles Beach: You can find beach front accommodation in Devonport and Coles beach is where to look. Jst a few minutes from the CBD, this areas is a peaceful spot ideal for travelers wanting a coastal escape. With family-friendly beach access, scenic walking tracks, and cozy accommodations, this area is perfect for relaxing by the water while staying close to Devonport’s main attractions. There’s even a dog beach – Back Beach – for your fur babies.

Miandetta, Don, Lilico & Forth: These leafy areas surrounding Devonport are quieter, and more spcaious. You’ll still have easy access to Devonport but are likely to find more unique stays – like farm stays, tiny houses, and ocean views. It’s a good option for families and nature lovers who want a bit of tranquility while remaining a short drive from the city center.
