First things first. Where to fly in to! There are four domestic aiports in Tasmania, but most travellers arrive in one of two major airports.

Where are the domestic airports in Tasmania?

  • Devonport Airport (regional airport)

So where is best to fly into Tasmania?

It depends on your trip itinerary. We’ve mapped the airports in Tasmania against Tasmania’s top 14 travel destinations, so you can see proximity.

If you’re primarily heading north – to Bay of Fires, Tamar Valley, Cradle Mountain, Stanley The Nut, the Tarkine or even Wineglass Bay, the closest airport is Launceston.

If you’re heading south – to Bruny Island, Porth Arthur, the Huon Valley, wineries in the Coal River Valley or even Mount Field National Park, Hobart Airport is the better bet.

But what if you’re doing a loop around Tasmania?

Well, we recommend flying in to Hobart Airport. It’s bigger, services more flights, and more airlines. With greater competition, you’re more likely to get cheap flights to Tassie! There are also more hire car companies and camper van companies that operate out of Hobart, near the airport.

International flights to Tasmania

How many international airports in Tasmania?

There’s one international airport in Tasmania – Hobart International Airport. Hobart International Airport and Hobart domestic airport are co-lated, in the same terminal building. To avoid confusion when you’re searching for flights, the Airport for both is HBA.

How to get to Tasmania – for international travellers

Tasmania is receiving an increasing number of international travellers since the pandemic. If you’re travelling here for popular locations such as Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, Canada or the Unite Kingdom, how do you get to Tasmania?

There’s only one international flight route into Tasmania and that’s from New Zealand. Check out more about this route down below 👇🏽

International tourists need to first fly into either Sydney or Melbourne, and then transfer to a domestic flight to Tasmania.

Sydney has 4 or so flights a day to both Hobart and Launceston, while Melbourne has 4 to 5 flights a day to each one. You can also transfer in Melbourne to flights that take you to Devonport and to Burnie.

Flying into Hobart Airport

Hobart International Airport (Hobart Airport) is Tasmania’s largest and busiest airport. Flying into Hobart is convenient to visit Tasmania’s southern regions like Bruny Island, Port Arthur, and the Huon Valley.

Car Hire Hobart Airport

Major car hire companies, including Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget, and Thrifty, have desks in the arrivals hall. There’s more local companies too, like East Coast Car Rentals, SIXT, Alice Car Rental, YesDrive Car Rentals.

Definitely book ahead, especially during peak travel seasons.

Filling up your rental car

There’s a BP, AMPOL and Shell located within a kilometre of the airport, so it’s easy to fill up your car before returning it

Campervan Hire Hobart Airport

There’s  more campervan hire companies operate out of Hobart than you can poke a stick at. It’s a popular way to travel around Tasmania.

You’ll find companies such as Britz, Maui, and Cruisin’ Motorhomes. There’s also smaller companies like Star RV and Motorhome Hire, AutoRent Hobart (Campers Plus company), LeisureRent Hobart, Tasmanian Campervan Hire, Tassie Motor Shacks, Spaceship Rentals Hobart and Wicked Campers.

Most have locations near the airport, and offer a ferry service to and fro.

How to get to Hobart from Hobart Airport

The Hobart SkyBus is a fast and affordable transfer into the city for solar travellers, running every 30 minutes. It’s $38 return and you can buy your ticket at the airport.

Taxis are also readily available, with fares typically ranging from $48 to $58 into the CBD.

Hobart International Airport

Hobart Airport domestic terminal and an international terminal are co located in the one building.

The international terminal only services direct flights to New Zealand at the moment.

Flying into Launceston Airport

Inbound flights per day: 10 – 15
Airlines: Qantas, Virgin Airlines, Jetstar, Qantas. 

Launceston Airport is the gateway to Tasmania’s north – for places like  the Tamar Valley wine region, Cradle Mountain’s Pver;amd Track, and the Bay of Fires beaches. Here’s what to know about flying in to Launceston Airport.

Direct Flights 

You can fly direct from Launceston to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane. Virgin Airlines also operates direct flghts from Launceston to Adelaide and Perth from October to April each year.

Sharp Airlines flies from Launceston to King Island, Flinders Island and Burnie.

There are no international flights into Launceston Airport.

Car Hire Launceston Airport

All major car hire companies operate here, including Europcar, Avis, Hertz, and Budget and Thrifty. You’ll aslo find local car rentals SIXT. East Coast Car Rentals has an office just beside the airport.

Booking ahead is essential. Rental cars in Tasmania are sometimes in short supply.

Filling up your rental car

To fill up your rental car before returning it, there’s a petrol station conveniently located on Evandale Road (B41) just 1 kilometre from Launceston Airport terminal.

Campervan Hire Launceston Airport

Campers Plus are the only campervan hire actually located at Launceston Airport. They’re a local campervan hire company based in Launceston for decades with great reveiws. AutoRent vehicles come under the Campers Plus label.

You can book and pick up campervans and motorhomes rented from other companies such as LeisureRent. The collection process is straightforward:

– call the shuttle on the number supplied at booking.

– shuttle drops off at Launceston DriveParkFly opposite the terminal.

– collect vehicle.

How to get to Launceston from the airport

Taxis are available at the terminal (sometimes!). We suggest booking a taxi before you arrive to avoid being stuck with none. The airport is not that well served.

Rides into Launceston’s city centre typically take around 15-20 minutes.

There used to be a shuttle bus from Launceston Airport into the city, howvever this stopped opearting in April 2024.

Other Services

Rheres a small cafe in Launceston Airport arrivals and two in the departures area,  for a last minute caffeine hit. The terminal is compact, making arrivals and departures a breeze.

Flying into Devonport Airport

Devonport Airport is where we catch the wingnut air taxis to Melbourne. They’re little Dash 8 planes and a super convenient way to get to and from Melbourne for to fly to Tasmania from Melbourne. If you’re flying in to the the Overland Track at Cradle Mountain, or visit the Tarkine, Devonport Airport is a good launch pad for your adventures. And a good route to find cheap airline tickets to Tasmania from time to time.

Car Hire Devonport Airport

Avis, Hertz, Budget, Thrifty and Europcar operate at the airport or nearby, making it easy to rent a car and hit the road. Driving is definitely the best way to explore this part of Tasmania, especially if you’re planning to visit remote areas.

Campervan Hire Devonport Airport

Aussie Campervans also offers hire andcollection from Devonport Airport.

While campervan hire options are more limited, Cruisin’ Motorhomes and other companies offer rentals. It’s best to book in advance and confirm shuttle pick-up details from the airport.

Getting to Devonport

The only way to reach the city is you don’t have a rental car is by taxi. It costs around $20.

You absolutely must book the taxi beforehand. Your arriving Qantas flight staff will announce on the flight to let them know if you want a taxi waiting on arrival. This is the best way to book a taxi in advance.

Alternatively, you can pre-arrange a transfer or car hire.

Other Services:

The terminal is small with limited services. There is a cafe in the departures area.

 

Flying into Burnie (Wynyard) Airport

Inbound flights per day:  4 to 5
Airlines: Regional Express, Qantas, Sharp Airlines

Burnie Airport, near Wynyard on Tasmania’s north coast, is another small regional airport that offers a direct link to Melbourne. It’s an excellent choice if you’re looking to explore the North West, including the Tarkine, Stanley, and the West Coast.

You can also fly from Burnie Airport to King Island or Launceston on Sharp Airlines.

Campervan Hire Burnie Airport

There’s limited options for campervan hire collection out of Burnie Airport.

Getting to Burnie and Beyond

Taxis are available at the terminal, but book beforehand so you’re not wating aroumd. A ride into Burnie costs around $20. Public transport options are limited, so hiring a car is highly recommended.

Other Services

Burnie Airport is small but functional, with the basics covered, including Wi-Fi and a café.

Melbourne has the most flights to Tassie, to the most destinations. You can fly direct to Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie from Melbourne.

There’s for or 5 flights a day from Melbourne to Launceston and to Hobart.

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin all fly from Melbourne to Launceston and to Hobart.

QantasLink flies directly from Melbourne to Devonport and Burnie.

Regional Express flies from Melbourne to Devonport and Burnie also.

Flying from Sydney to Tasmania

Flight times: It takes 1h40m to fly to Launceston and 1h50m to fly to Hobart

 

You can fly directly from Sydney to Hobart and Launceston. There’s usually 3 or 4 flights a day to each of these Tasmanian airports.

Sydney is a good location to transit for international flights to Tasmania.

There are no flights from Sydney to Devonport or Burnie Airports.

Flying from Brisbane to Tasmania

Flight times: It takes 2h40m to fly to Launceston and 2h50m to fly to Hobart

 

You can fly directly from Brisbae to Hobart and Launceston. There’s only 2 flights a day from Brisbane to Launceston direct. There are are more flights with stop overs through Melbourne.

There’s usually 4 flights a day from Brisbane to Hobart direct.

There are no flights from Brisbane to Devonport or Burnie Airports.You need to stop over in Melbourne to get from Brisbane to Deveonport or to Burnie.

Flying from Adelaide to Tasmania

Flight times: It takes 1h45m to fly to Launceston and 1h50m to fly to Hobart

 

Flights from Adelaide to Hobart

You can fly directly from Adelaide to Hobart, but flights are only available four days a week. There are flights on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

On other days, you can fly to Hobart via Melbourne.

Flights from Adelaide to Launceston

You can fly from Adelaide to Launceston three days a week – Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. These direct flights only operate from October to April.

From April to October you can fly from Adelaide to Launceston via Melbourne.

There are no flights from Adelaide to Devonport or Burnie Airports.

Flying from Perth to Tasmania

Airlines:   Virgin Airlines

Flight times: It takes 3h50m to fly to Launceston and 4h15m to fly to Hobart

 

Flights from Perth to Hobart

You can fly directly from Perth to Hobart.  Flights are available either three or four days a week, depending on the month of the year. Flights are available on inconsistent days each week. It’s best to search Virgin Airlines for their specific flight schedule.

Flights from Perth to Launceston

You can fly from Perth to Launceston direct three days a week – Friday, Sunday and Monday. These direct flights only operate from October to March.

From April to October you can fly from Perth to Launceston via Melbourne.

There are no flights from Perth to Devonport or Burnie Airports.

Flights from New Zealand to Tasmania

Airlines: Air New Zealand

Flight times: 3h55m

Flights run from Auckland New Zealand to Hobart Tasmania 3 days a week – Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. These flights only run October to March.

There are 2 major airports in Tasmania, in the cities of Launceston and Hobart. Hobart is in the south of Tasmania. Launceston is in the north.  

Most travellers to Tasmania (by a long shot!) fly into Hobart Airport.

Tasmania also has regional airports in Devonport and Wynyard (Burnie).

 

Is Hobart domestic airport the same as the international airport?

Yes, Hobart Airport caters for both domestic (Australia) flights and international (New Zealand only) flights from the one terminal. There is no separate international airport in Hobart.
