What to know before you book

There’s no such thing as a bad view at the Bay of Fires—but not all accommodation is created equal. If you’ve made it this far, you already know Tasmania’s east coast is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in Australia. What you might not realise is how few places there actually are to stay along this stretch—and how wildly different they can feel.

Some homes are perched right among Bay of Fires best beaches, with nothing but white sand, granite boulders and crashing surf between you and New Zealand. Others are nestled into the hillside above Binalong Bay, where you can sip coffee and watch the waves roll in—before strolling down to the Hub café for lunch. Where you stay will shape your whole experience. And at the Bay of Fires, that experience should feel like something special.

This guide breaks down what you need to know before you book, why location really matters here, and how to choose between luxury, low-key, remote, or village-based accommodation. You’ll also find tips on when to come, what to look for, and how to avoid the rookie mistakes that leave first-timers trekking back to St Helens for toothpaste or takeaway.

Bay of Fires Bush Retreat

If you’re looking for a glamping stay that strikes the perfect balance between comfort and adventure, make it Bay of Fires Bush Retreat. It’s not right on the beach—but that’s part of the appeal. Nestled in quiet bushland just a short drive from Binalong Bay, it feels completely off-grid without sacrificing a single creature comfort.

The bell tents are roomy and seriously cosy, even when Tassie throws a cold snap. But it’s the shared spaces that make this place shine—an open-air kitchen stocked with local goodies, a bar area that makes you want to linger, and indoor-outdoor bathrooms that manage to feel both rugged and high-end. Throw in a couple of crackling fire pits, and you’ve got the perfect basecamp for a few days of exploring the East Coast.

This is glamping for people who want to get out there during the day and wind down in style at night. Bring your hiking boots, your beach towel, and your appetite—it’s the kind of place where adventure starts with sunrise and ends with a beer by the fire.

Top 10 Things We Love About Glamping in Tasmania’s Bay of Fires

The stars are next level – With barely any light pollution, the night sky here puts on a full-blown performance. Bonus points if you’re in a hot tub.

You’re in nature, not roughing it – Think possums rustling outside your luxe dome while you’re tucked under a wool throw with a book and a glass of red.

Every stay feels different – Domes, yurts, bell tents—each with its own vibe, setting, and secret magic.

The wildlife is part of the charm – Wallabies at breakfast. Birdsong at dusk. And maybe even a curious echidna trundling past your door.

It’s warm. Even in winter. – Heated blankets, wood fires, and thick canvas walls mean you can glamp year-round (especially on the drier East Coast).

No setting up, no packing down – Just turn up. Everything’s ready. All you have to do is breathe out.

Campfire rituals are still a thing – Marshmallows, cheese platter, local whiskey, stories with strangers or silence with stars overhead. Pick your mood.

It’s the kind of escape that actually feels like one – No emails, no deadlines, just trees, tides, and a slower rhythm.

You get the romance of camping with actual beds and bathrooms – Enough said.

The places are run by people who love Tasmania – And it shows—in every thoughtful detail, every handwritten welcome note, every perfectly positioned fire pit.

STAY

Bay of Fires

Here’s the thing most booking sites won’t tell you: not all properties with “Bay of Fires” in the title are actually in the Bay of Fires. That term gets stretched to include everything from beach shacks among the dunes to homes a 25-minute drive away. And while the whole region is beautiful, the experience you’ll have can be wildly different depending on where you land.

There’s no accommodation in the Bay of Fires Conservation Area that we know of. Because it’s a conservation area! But that doesn’t mean you can’t have the Bay of Fires beaches on your doorstep where you stay.  There is accomodation inside Bay of Fires where you’re getting the real thing—empty beaches, tea tree scrub, no shops, and no neighbours. Places you get to claim the ‘I stayed in the Bay of Fires’ title – for real. They’re ideal if you want peace, privacy, and a front-row seat to the coast’s natural drama. But these properties are few, premium, and often booked months in advance.

Binalong Bay

Binalong Bay, at the southern tip of the Bay of Fires, is a small village with more accommodation options and a bit more buzz. You’ll have access to the only café in the area (the Hub), a short walk to Binalong Bay beach, and some of the best elevated views on the coast. Most homes are self-contained, family-friendly, and built into the hillside—meaning big decks and even bigger sunrises.

There are no hotels in Bay of Fires or Binalong Bay. All accommodation here is holiday homes, shacks, or boutique eco stays. Oh, and of course one of Tasmania’s best glamping experiences! If you’re dreaming of a hotel-style stay with turndown service and a breakfast buffet, you won’t find it here. What you’ll find instead is privacy, space, and a kind of wild luxury you can’t fake.

What to look for

Decks and outdoor living spaces

You’ll want somewhere you can sit outside — for coffee in the morning, for sundowners after the beach, for star-watching once it gets dark. Big decks, patios, and outdoor seating make a huge difference when half the magic of Bay of Fires is what’s happening outside, not in.

BBQs or outdoor kitchens

There’s only one cafe/restaurant in Binalong Bay (The Hub), and no food outlets inside the Bay of Fires itself. A decent BBQ setup lets you make the most of local seafood or a simple meal without needing to drive into St Helens every time you get hungry.

Outdoor showers or beach rinse areas

After a day scrambling over rocks and wandering beaches, you’ll be covered in salt and sand. Places with outdoor showers — or at least a hose setup — save you dragging half the beach into the house. Bonus points if you can rinse off under the stars.

Light, airy layouts

Some older Tassie shacks can feel dark and poky. Look for places with big windows, sliding doors, and open-plan spaces. Fresh air and good light make it feel like you’re still part of the landscape, even once you come inside.

Walking distance to the beach

Check the fine print. A house that’s “close to the beach” isn’t much use if you have to jump in the car every time you want to swim or catch the sunrise. Being able to wander down barefoot matters more than you think once you’re here.

Fireplaces or firepits (for winter or shoulder season stays)

Outside of summer, Tassie gets cold at night — even in autumn or spring. Having a woodfire inside, or a firepit outside, turns an ordinary night into something you’ll actually remember. Plus it means you can visit in the quieter seasons and still have an incredible trip.

Tranquility Bay of Fires

$$$$$ | Sleeps 6 |  near The Gardens

Tranquility isn’t just a name—it’s the whole brief. And it’s location near Honeymoon Beach is simply perfect. This is one of the most luxurious and sought-after holiday homes close to The Gardens. Staying here feels less like booking a rental and more like slipping into a private coastal retreat that just happens to be all yours.

The house is architecturally designed and surrounded by native bush and blue seas. Inside, it’s all clean lines and sweeping glass that blurs the boundary between indoors and out.

It sleeps up to six across three bedrooms, each with a king bed and its own ensuite bathroom. The kitchen is built for foodies, with top-of-the-line appliances, and the living area wraps around a central woodfire that keeps the whole place toasty in the cooler months.

But the real showstopper is outside. The deck stretches across the full length of the house, facing out to the ocean.  From here, it’s just a short track down to the beach and an outdoor shower for rinsing off after a beach swim.

You’re a 20-minute drive from St Helens and off-grid in all the best ways. But if what you’re after is total privacy, architectural beauty, and a front-row seat to Tasmania’s wildest coastline, Tranquility lives up to its name and then some.

It books out months in advance for good reason but you can sometimes get ‘pay 2, stay 3’ deals in winter. This is the luxury Bay of Fires accommodation people wish they’d booked sooner.

Holland House Bay of Fires

Sleeps 5 | Architect-designed luxury in The Gardens

If you’re the kind of traveller who dreams in magazine spreads and prefers their wild places with curated interiors, Holland House is your match. This isn’t a shack. It’s a sculptural, architect-designed retreat set deep inside the Bay of Fires—surrounded by nothing but tea trees, sky, and the rhythmic roll of the sea.

The house sleeps up to five guests in two queen bedrooms and a third smaller bedroom with a single bed. While the home is not small, it’s deliberately minimalist. You won’t find clutter here. You will calm instead. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outside in and direct your disbelieving gaze outward to the sea.

There’s a woodfire inside for the colder months, and a kitchen made for those who like to cook. It’s fully self-contained, stocked with everything you need, and the kind of place where you can unpack a few days’ worth of groceries and settle in without needing to leave. There’s even an outdoor shower for rinsing off the salt and sand.

What makes Holland House truly special is where it is—not just how it looks.  You’re right near Honeymoon Beach—where the sand squeaks underfoot and the sea might be yours alone. At night, there are no streetlights. Just stars and silence.

It’s remote, romantic, and in high demand for a reason. This one books out well in advance. And when you do arrive, don’t be surprised if you immediately start planning your return.

    Oriole Bay of Fires

    $$$$$ | Sleeps 6 |  near Cosy Corner

    The Cove

$$$$ Sleeps 6 | Spacious coastal holidy home

If you’re travelling with family or a small group and want that sweet spot between comfort and coastal wilderness, pick The Cove.  It’s a generous, modern three-bedroom home set just behind the dunes—where you can settle in, spread out, and exhale.

Located just north of Binalong Bay, The Cove gives you the full nature-immersion experience without asking you to rough it.  Just native bushland, bird calls, and a sandy path that leads you to one of Tasmania’s most beautiful, empty beaches.

The interiors are light and modern with a coastal edge. Think white walls, timber floors, an open-plan kitchen-living area, and glass doors that open to a massive deck. The outdoor setup is a standout—there’s an undercover dining area, BBQ, and space for everyone to lounge after a day exploring. Inside, there’s a fully equipped kitchen, and laundry to catch up on the holiday washing.

This is the kind of Bay of Fires accommodation that feels like a proper holiday home. You can cook up local seafood, and pour a glass of wine while the sun sets through the gum trees. It’s comfortable, considered, and beautifully private.

The Cove isn’t bargain accommodation—but if you’re splitting it with friends or family, the value is excellent given the location, layout, and the fact that you’re right in the middle of Tasmania’s most iconic coastline. Bay of Fires doesn’t get much more liveable than this.

Where to stay in Bay of Fires

    Driftwood Bay of Fires

    Sleeps 6 | Scandinavian-style beach house

Driftwood is what happens when someone takes a classic Tassie beach shack and gives it a total refresh—without sanding off its soul. It’s still relaxed and unpretentious, but it’s also clean, spacious, and thoughtfully set up for small families or two couples.

This house sits inside the Bay of Fires, so you’re already ahead. Step outside and you’re on the beach, in a location so quiet you’ll forget the rest of the world even exists. If you want to start your mornings with a barefoot wander and a coffee on the deck while the kids potter around spotting wallabies, Driftwood is your kind of place.

Inside, there are three open-plan bedrooms on the mezzanine level—two with king beds (one of which can be split into singles) and one with a queen bed—accommodating up to six guests. The master bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom including a bath and separate shower. The other two bedrooms share a separate bathroom and toilet. The kitchen is full-sized and well equipped, featuring a large oven, gas cooktop, and spacious benches. The woodfire keeps things cosy in cooler months, and the lounge opens onto a sunny outdoor area with a BBQ and table for six.

It’s not luxurious, but that’s not the point. Driftwood is comfortable, casual, and makes you feel instantly at home. You’re not in a high-end retreat—you’re in a place where you can pour a wine, and light the fire without worrying about footprints.
